Introducing Sydney-based Artist: Nadia Hernández

Name, occupation / What you do for a living? / What you do creatively?

My name is Nadia and I’m an artist. I make a living from my practice, which is diverse and has various outcomes and incomes. I have a background in design which really helped me when I was starting out!

Where do you live at the moment? / Where do you call home? / Where do you dream to live?

At the moment I live in Sydney. I usually call Venezuela home, and Mérida my hometown but! I call my tiny studio apartment in Redfern home too.

What is it that interests you about art?

Art offers alternative viewpoints, it creates space for discussion, it is the olive oil of society.

What is the inspiration behind your work? / Who inspires you?

My work is inspired by a metaphysical concept in the Spanish language called “Querencia” which roughly translates to “the place where one gather’s a sense of strength.” All my work is connected to place and reflects on my experience of identity in the midst of the current Venezuelan diaspora. I am inspired by an ongoing understanding of my culture, and its vastness, from the cultural legacy of composer Simón Díaz to the imagery and resilience of ongoing protests and political resistance.

Whose Instagram is your favorite at the moment?

My favourite instagram is @h_e_r_s_t_o_r_y an amazing archive of herstoric lesbian imagery that is trans, non-binary and queer inclusive. I also like @iamcardib and @veteranas_and_rucas.
