σημειωτικός sēmeiōtikos by Gabriel Cole

Name, occupation / What you do for $ / What you do creatively ?

My name is Gabriel cole I’m 26 years. Im an artist and a designer and in previous life i was a professional runner. Currently i try to make a living of using my creative practise or using what i know to help others its a balance between doing my own work and doing work for others.

Where do you live atm / Where do you call home / Where do you dream to live ?

I live in carlton north in Melbourne which is also where i work from, it can be a good and bad balance. Melbourne is my home although i am from Adelaide. Im not sure where i would dream to live, but i know what i need in a city, music, culture food and surf.

What is it that interests you about art ?

In simplest terms its an attraction its a visual and physical obsession. I wasn’t always interested in art and photography it wasn’t in my house nor was it encouraged or was it part of my school agenda. I had to find it. My main thought on art and design is that art is to create a problem with the potential to solve it or to not, and design is to solve a problem.

What are you working on atm & How long have you worked on this project ?

I’m working on a solo show called σημειωτικός sēmeiōtikos, at Irene Rose gallery, which means observant of signs. I’ve been working on this show for a month and i guess in total i have given my self around 6 weeks to make this show, this was the intention. The show opens on the 24th of april.

What was the inspo behind this project ?

It’s an on-going study into the deconstruction of symbols and motifs. The show is a re purposing of the two-dimensional symbol, inspired by industrial machinery and workers uniforms. I am aiming to expand upon its initial composition by observing its form and repurposing it in a new, experimental three dimensional format. With an aim to Gesture a movement from a static object into a musical flow. Visually the show is inspired by the Structures in symbols and signage but with an intention to break its meaning to manipulate the object so its not legible anymore and thus has no meaning.

Whose work are you inspired by ?

Beyond my thoughts on the show and its inspiration I’m inspired by contemporary art, but with a sense of folk art and traditional aspects aligned to it. More so these days music is my main inspiration, listening and watching. It gives me a sense of movement and emotion. CS + KREME is my main tip at the moment.

Whose instagram is your favorite atm ?

sky diver records and soft space man surfboards

The exhibition may be viewed at Irene Rose gallery until May 19th.
